World Info
The world Lapis is from is exactly like ours, except that the barrier between the worlds of the living and dead is especially weak. Due to the excess of spiritual energy seeping into the world, it has resulted in powerful spirit mediums being born who are known as Ghost Masters. They hold the ability to recruit spirits under their command and in return, they provide the spirits with some of their spiritual energy, making them more powerful than average ghosts. As a result of the weak barrier, hauntings are more frequent and more dangerous, and Ghost Masters tend to be employed to deal with the more troublesome and dangerous cases by either banishing the spirit or by recruiting it. There are ghosts that do not do anything and are happy enough to wander and observe the living, those that enjoy pranking the living and scaring them, and those that want to hurt the living and sometimes other spirits. Ghosts that are harmful to others tend to hold a great deal of malice and anger, which empowers them and allows them to manifest themselves, while the more benevolent ghosts rarely ever show themselves and are the ones more likely to have passed on anyway.
The excess of spiritual energy means that things such as 'magic' is possible, although the only ones capable of this 'magic' are the Ghost Masters or people who are really devoted to knowing more about the occult. The 'magic' used by Ghost Masters and certain devoted individuals can be used to aid or summon ghosts, and are usually in the form of rituals - from small ones such as mixing herbs together and chanting, to bigger scale ones involving singing and dancing. All of which act as a way to pull and channel in that energy to be used for whatever purpose the user desired. This spiritual energy used for 'magic' can be used against spirits, and this is done by channeling spiritual energy into pieces of paper that have chants designed to repel spirits, which allows normal people a way to combat spirits. These methods have been around for centuries, but in recent years there have been a look at attempts to use technology to combat spirits, but considering how ghosts can drain energy from sources, this hasn't worked out too well yet.
Background
Lapis was born in Campobasso, Italy, to Giulio and Caprice Fathalla, and an older sister by fourteen years, Laguna Fathalla. Her childhood until the age of four was fairly normal; Lapis was a quiet baby and still stayed rather quiet as she grew into a toddler - although she had a habit of talking to herself. Things only start to get complicated a few months after her fourth birthday, where she and her mother witnessed a car crash while they were out shopping. While everyone was horrified, Lapis was only curious and asked her mother why there were hurt people just standing in the middle of the wreckage - and why the medics were just ignoring them. What Lapis was seeing were the spirits of the people who just died, and this was when Lapis' abilities started to make themselves known. Her mother, not really knowing what to do, sought out help from Lapis' paternal grandmother, Dafne Fathalla, who had displayed similar abilities - though hers were becoming less powerful as she became older.
This was the start of her distancing from her parents as her grandmother taught Lapis of her abilities. While she still lived with her parents, they found themselves unsure of how to handle their daughter's gifts and so kept their distance, thinking it was for the best so that Lapis would be able to focus more on her powers. Laguna, while shocked over her sisters abilities, still tried to treat Lapis as she normally did, hoping she wouldn't notice the change in their parents behavior. But Lapis was perceptive even as a child, and her parents distance made her withdraw into herself as a result - eventually her parents pulled her out of school once teachers started to mention that Lapis didn't play with the other kids and would apparently speak to herself, and had Lapis go live with her grandmother. It wasn't too long after this that she met Mitchell while she was running errands when she was six, who had just recently been burned to death in a nearby fire at an apartment complex. Having realized that this little girl was the only one who could see or hear him, decided to stay with her, resulting in the first actual 'contract' she's made.
As Lapis grew, her abilities grew with her, and she started to take in more spirits under her command as she met and spoke to more spirits when she was out and about, though Mitchell was always the one who wanted to stay summoned. But besides her grandparents, sister and spirits, Lapis didn't really bond with anyone else, noticing that her behavior tended to unnerve people and it only got worse when they realized what she was able to do. So, she kept to herself most of the time, and as she grew older, people who knew of her abilities and believed in them, or people who knew of Lapis via her grandmother, started to ask her for assistance with hauntings. She dealt with a few hauntings in her home country, banishing or recruiting the more dangerous spirits when she could, despite it blowing up in her face sometimes. Almost literally. Her sister, when she wasn't busy with studying and working towards being a chemist, would accompany her and act as a guide to keep her more reckless sister out of trouble. Laguna eventually enlisted the help of Lapis and their grandmother to help teach her to use wards, so that she can better help Lapis during her jobs. While her relationship with Laguna and her grandmother stayed close, by this point, she had almost become a stranger to her parents and made no effort to try to reconcile, even though Laguna told her about how their parents worried.
However, one job went incredibly badly when she was twenty. She, along with a few exorcists, went to the site of an abandoned factory where an apparently dangerous spirit lurked and Lapis attempted to banish it, however it was far too powerful for her to handle. This resulted in the spirit possessing her, pushing out her soul in the process, and thus going on a rampage, only being expelled from Lapis' body with the aid of the exorcists and her sisters basic knowledge of spirits after a few hours. While people were hurt, nobody was killed, except Lapis herself had technically died as a result of the spirit having inhabited her body for too long and her own spirit being pushed out. Luckily Lapis' spirit was able to get back into her body, but waking up in the arms of her hysterically crying sister, hands covered in blood while she had faint, fuzzy recollections of what happened did leave a large impact on her. When her parents heard the news, this seemed to be the final straw and they stopped acknowledging Lapis, hoping that by doing so, she would stop taking part in such dangerous jobs and would come back home. This plan failed and Lapis felt even more isolated from them - instead both Laguna and Lapis decided to travel to England for a year as a sort of holiday and due to Laguna going to continue the rest of her studies abroad. Once Laguna finished her studies in England, they eventually traveled to America where Laguna finished the remainder of her studies, and thus was able to take up a job as a chemist to help fund their settlement into America. Though the money Lapis had saved up from her ghost hunting jobs made the move easier.
Now Lapis and Laguna have settled into Everett in Washington; Lapis having just turned twenty-two and it's here where Lapis meets her 'rival' Ghost Master, Elliot Hale. She had been investigating rumors about a haunting, and it's then she meets Elliot, who was investigating the same thing. While Lapis had no desire to interact with him, he took offence about another Ghost Master being on 'his turf', and so tried to prompt Lapis into fighting him - which she didn't want at all, so she was quick to teleport away. Over the next couple of weeks, Lapis would find herself running into Elliot, both on and off jobs; expressing that she didn't want anything to do with him, which Elliot tended not to listen to. While Lapis found his tendency to butt into her jobs irritating, and while they hardly get along, this does mark as an initial step for Lapis to connect with people beyond her family and spirits.
PERSONALITY:
Lapis isn't the sort of person that people will think of as 'lively' when they first meet her; with her expression usually set into something calm and neutral, and with her words always spoken a second too slow and a bit too softly. Emotion rarely seeps through her tone, and at first, it doesn't seem like she cares at all about whatever she's talking about - her voice is consistently slow and soft, rarely unchanging no matter the circumstances. With how slow her words tend to come and how calm she tends to be, it would seem as if she's the type of person who doesn't care, who doesn't really have any strong feelings towards anything around her. First impressions probably make her seem completely uncaring and cold.
Except this isn't true. The calmness and softness comes from both being naturally quiet and an attempt to reign herself in. While her withdrawn demeanor is something inherent to her, thanks to a life of not having much contact with actual people besides family, she tries to keep herself in check in fear of losing control of herself once more, out of fear of becoming possessed once again. Though her appearance of being meek and calm is a contrast to the words that come out of her mouth; she isn't above being tactless and blunt, simply because she was never taught any better. Manners are wasted on the dead, so she's learned that it's better to just say what you think. So something like a brain-to-mouth filter is a concept that never occurs to her, and it'll take a moment for her to actually process if she said something rude. Even though she rarely changes her mind about what she says or does, thanks to being a bit too stubborn. Most of the time she tends to do her own thing and drag others along with her, displaying a quiet, but strong will - to the point where she tends not to really listen to other, often better ideas. And when she doesn't tend to get her way, she's likely to get huffy, allowing others to see her displeasure.
Despite her social awkwardness, she does at least notice when she does or says something that upsets someone, and is usually quick to apologize. Which is a glimpse of her true, kind-hearted nature that's hidden under the constant calmness and blunt words; because while it may seem like Lapis doesn't care, the truth is she cares far too much. Even though she has trouble connecting to others, that doesn't stop her from trying to reach out to help others, even if they're complete strangers. She does it simply because she wants to, and one of her favorite things is getting someone to laugh or smile. The fact that she continues her occupation as a Ghost Master, despite the dangers of it and how it's cost her life before, is another example of how vast her kindness is - because she does it to protect others, despite how dangerous it is.
Because Lapis genuinely likes helping people. Though is very bad at accepting kindness in return, thanks to how she's more used to people being scared of her. A thing which she's come to accept as a simple fact - even though what she really wants is to try to reach out and make friends, finding herself to be lonely despite her ghostly companions. While her kindness and genuine desire to reach out should work in her favor, her tendency to be blunt and just generally awkward doesn't, along with the simple fact she can see and hangs out with ghosts. And any display of friendliness towards her is enough to cause her usual calmness to shatter in surprise, which then quickly changes to embarrassment as she tries to make an excuse or think of why would someone be nice to her. Before quickly scrambling to make herself look calm once more. It doesn't process why people would be kind to her, since if her parents cut ties with her, then why would anyone else ever want to get close to her? But that just makes each and every act of kindness towards her all the more meaningful and significant to her.
But her odd upbringing does mean there are twisted parts to her personality as well. She's capable of both great kindness and great cruelty, and has it instilled in her by her ghostly companions to always get back at others and to never let go of a grudge. The dead never forgive and forget, after all. Lapis isn't above asking her ghost friends to mess with and terrify someone who she feels has wronged her, and she can be incredibly vindictive if pushed far enough, which luckily rarely happens due to how calm she tends to be. Death also means nothing to her now, and what she's experienced means that she's incredibly fearless and doesn't even bat an eye towards situations considered dangerous or terrifying. Because death is simply a part of life, and while she can understand why people fear it, she simply views it as something necessary and as another step. Though after having lost her life before, she's making no attempts to lose it again - life is something precious, after all.
Even if she does tend to be willing to take a hit or two if it's to protect someone else, but their lives are always above hers - everyone else always comes first. Unless she doesn't like them, then she might pretend not to see them needing help unless they're close to death. Though Lapis would never hurt someone with her own hands; her possession causing her to panic at the simple thought of hurting someone with her own hands ever again - but it's a different matter if it's asking her ghost friends to do it. But it takes Lapis being pushed to anger to make her reach this point, something that rarely happens - not unless someone she cares about is hurt, such as her sister, or the dead is disrespected. Then the calm facade vanishes, and she lets her anger take over - anger isn't weakness after all, and her temper can be vicious and violent. Luckily it calms as quickly as it spikes, but her most callous moments are able to be witnessed once she's reached this point.
Some of this twisted nature leaks into her sense of humor as well, as she isn't above quietly teasing or gently poking fun of someone, finding flustered reactions amusing. Which leads into how she actually tends to be the playful sort, albeit quiet and subtle most time; while she does try to keep herself reigned in, she can't stop herself from seeking ways to entertain herself. Plus smiling and being happy is not something she views as weak, so she finds herself able to show this, even if it takes a bit of coaxing. Unless someone tells a joke, then she's very likely to laugh at that. She's the kind of person who would go along with someone's banter or jokes calmly and respond in kind, no matter how nonsensical. Or to simply state something completely ridiculous, again with a completely calm expression.
And despite how she tends to be quiet, it doesn't stop her strong love of singing and dancing - viewing this as a way to freely express herself, without having to worry, and as something she can be proud of that isn't related to her powers. And it's even better when she can get someone to join in. Because having fun is always better with someone else, and anyone she can spend time with and have fun with are those she would hold dearly. Though her devotion to those special to her may be a bit... extreme, such as her absolute adoration of her elder sister, but her heart is in the right place. Even if she can be clumsy at showing how she cares, and tends to be either too heavy-handed with her praise or too uncertain with showing physical affection.
And when it comes down to it, Lapis is nowhere near as emotionless as she tries to act, as hints show through her actions; a tilt of her head, a raised eyebrow, a huff and a pout. Lapis tries to hide herself, but she can never hide things completely; she'll smile when she's happy, frown when she's unhappy while making the excuse that these aren't weakness. She gets embarrassed and shy towards acts of kindness towards her, and will calmly tease someone and then giggle at their embarrassment. Because while she tries to keep her guard up, she can't help but want to let people in, wanting to ease her loneliness - she wants to try, even if this only means just helping others.
That's always been more than enough for her.
ABILITIES:
Lapis is a Ghost Master; a powerful spirit medium who has the unique capability to make spiritual energy links with spirits, so long as the spirit is not stronger than her. The 'contract' increases the power of the spirit, and also increases her own spiritual power. Lapis can also adjust how much energy the spirit gains, and can drain them of power if she so wishes to. However, this works both ways, and Lapis can be drained of power as well. When these 'contracts' are made, the spirits can either stay with her in the land of the living, or go rest in the spirit world until she needs to summon them. At this moment in time, Lapis has around twenty spirits resting in the spirit world, and two actively summoned with her, Mitchell and Peter. If in Futurology only one ghost can come with her, it would be Mitchell - the ghost most protective of her and is likely to shield her from anything he perceives as a threat. He has the typical abilities of a spirit, such as draining heat/energy from a surrounding area, possessing people/objects and can pick up physical objects. As a result of dying by fire, he is able to conjure up spiritual fire, which can hurt both humans and spirits, and is able to control fire, though only if it's with a radius of a few feet. He's also a jerk who doesn't like anyone but Lapis, and when seen, has the appearance of a horribly burned young man.
Being a Ghost Master also gives Lapis other abilities, such as;

Being a Ghost Master also gives Lapis other abilities, such as;
👻 Banishing Spirits: So long as a spirit isn't more powerful than her, Lapis can use her spiritual energy to basically push a spirit into the spirit world. She may sometimes have to weaken a spirit first to do this, which is where the aid of her own ghosts come into play.Lapis also holds some advanced knowledge of human anatomy, as a result of the information she learned from ghosts. Lapis also possess an extensive knowledge of the occult and rituals, though she isn't actually able to perform any rituals unless she has all the necessary materials. She's also incredibly skilled with dancing and singing, and she's able to use these skills in rituals; so far the only rituals she's able to do from memory and with only her singing are spirit summoning, creating large spiritual barriers and helping to boost a spirits power. These rituals only last while Lapis is singing, and will immediately end once she stops.
👻 Seeing: Another power Lapis has as a Ghost Master is the ability to let other people 'see' the spirits. This is done via physical contact and by Lapis concentrating on opening up that persons part of their mind; all people have the ability to see ghosts, but only people like spirit mediums or Ghost Masters have that part 'active' due to the spiritual energy they have. However, this process isn't exactly pleasant, as the person seeing will experience grainy vision and a loud, painful, thumping sound in their head similar to a heartbeat.
👻 Spiritual Abilities: All Ghost Masters have the ability to shield against spiritual attacks, though each Master has their own unique ability. For Lapis, this is the ability to 'teleport', though she can only move a few meters at most and using this ability more than twice in a row tires her out. She's also able to walk or run abnormally fast for brief periods of time as well. This also extends to having a powerful sixth sense, and thus Lapis can easily identify if someone is human or not, though she will only get a ping of 'inhuman' or 'human' from them at most. The same thing applies to if someone is living or undead.
👻 Weakness to Holy: All Ghost Masters are hurt by holy items, as a result of their links to the dead. Lapis herself is particularly damaged by them as a result of actually becoming dead herself, and thus holy water burns her, and items such as crosses and bibles harms her if she holds them. Exorcisms or items that have an exorcising effect will harm her greatly, to the point where it's almost fatal.
